The purpose of this position is to provide rehabilitative skills training, guidance, encouragement and support for residents of the intensive residential treatment program to ensure an atmosphere of safety, security and responsible mental health care. This position requires to work closely with MHW Supervisor, scheduling and training MHWs. A major challenge of this position is to gain and maintain resident’s trust and confidence. Also challenging is the need to be aware of the levels of functioning of each resident and to respond and provide interventions appropriately.
Essential Job Functions
- Maintain the vision, mission and values of Touchstone Mental Health (TMH).
- Remain up-to-date regarding the various programs of TMH.
- Remain up-to-date regarding agency policies and procedures and perform all functions in accordance with TMH policies and procedures.
- Provide the highest quality of customer service consistent with TMH’s values and standards.
Supportive & Motivational Client Relations
- Work within the community and among constituents to help create comprehensive relationships that align one’s own and the organizations priorities with the needs and values of the broader community.
- Serve as a role model for residents regarding problem solving, decision-making, conflict resolutions, independent living skills and responsibilities.
- Observe residents’ behavior as well as physical and emotional symptoms and take action as needed.
- Perform behavioral management interventions according to individual treatment plan and individual abuse prevention plan.
- Monitor self-administration of medications.
- Provide input into development of residents’ individual treatment plans.
- Based on information provided in treatment plan and from MHC and/or ILS Coordinator, provide skills-training for residents in independent living skills to include personal hygiene, clothing care, meal preparation, kitchen cleanliness, housekeeping, laundry, and budgeting. Provide assistance as needed when resident is not able to complete a task.
- Based on information provided in treatment plan from MHC, provide skills-training interventions around rehabilitative and clinical issues pertinent to a resident’s treatment plan.
- Assist residents who are moving in or moving out of the facility
- Responsible for the maintenance and protection of a safe and healthy program environment.
- Perform daily housekeeping and house management duties.
- Prepare, serve and clean up after meals.
- Follow established guidelines for kitchen safety and cleanliness.
- Perform needed housekeeping or routine maintenance tasks that emerge during the shift
- Prepare living quarters for newly admitted residents.
- Report any needed repairs. Notify appropriate staff when supplies need to be reordered.
- Supervise fire and tornado drills as assigned.
- Serve on agency committees and task forces as requested.
- Maintain an underlying curiosity and desire to know more about things, people or issues, including the desire for knowledge and staying current with health, organizational, industry and professional trends and developments.
- Effectively utilize “soft” and “hard” skills in identifying needed changes, gaining support and buy-in from stakeholders, and sustaining commitment and progress within change efforts over time.
- Effectively use operational and clinical information from internal and external sources, including technology, to support strategies for performance improvement and long-term financial viability.
Staff Management & Leadership
- Demonstrate the ability to build relationships and work cooperatively with others, be part of a team, express positive attitudes and expectations of others, build team commitment by promoting good working relationships regardless of personal likes or dislikes, and sustain professional contacts for the purposes of networking within the team and the field.
- Provide role modeling, scheduling, and coordination with the mental health workers.
- Maintain the proper staffing levels to adequately schedule coverage for a 24 hours, 7 days a week program.
- Share emergency shift coverage and coordination of responsibility to ensure adequate program coverage.
- Be available for emergency shift coverage on short notice, if necessary.
- Maintain high performance standards for staff.
Program Team Member
- Develop and demonstrate a set standard of personal expectations for excellence in quality and quantity of work.
- At the beginning and end of each shift, attend shift report to participate in communication concerning residents and facility.
- Read the client log and determine the current level of functioning of each resident, needed interventions supervision levels, and assignment of eyes on checks. Regularly review treatment/rehabilitative plans and interventions of all residents.
- Plan, execute and oversee large and small-scale projects, including preparing detailed project plans, managing project resources and providing project oversight and sponsorship.
- Utilize best practices in facilitation, conflict resolution, and meeting management when conducting productive and goal-oriented group interactions.
- Be available for coverage as scheduled and as needed for emergency coverage on short notice.
- Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings.
- Communicate essential information within the program, the agency, and when appropriate, the community.
- Assist in orienting new team members.
- Attend and participate in required trainings.
- As assigned.
The work of this position entails the use of standard office equipment as well as a wide variety of household appliances and equipment including but not limited to the clothes washer and dryer, dishwasher, stove, microwave oven and vacuum cleaner. The work of this position requires that the incumbent be able to see, hear, speak, read and write English clearly in order to ensure client welfare and development. This position requires the ability to drive an automobile on a daily basis. This position will also be approved to use agency vehicles. The incumbent must be able to reach, stand use fingers, feel and drive up to 2/3 of the hours worked; climb stairs, stoop, kneel, crouch, walk, remain in a static position, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, perform repetitive motions, and carry up to 1/3 of the hours worked. The incumbent must also be able to lift up to 10 lbs from the waist, knee or floor and occasionally 25 lbs from the waist.
Current Available Schedule
- Tuesday – Saturday per below:
- Tuesday- 2:30pm-11pm, Wed- 3pm-11pm, Thurs- 3pm-11pm, Fri- 3pm-11pm, Sat- 12pm-8pm (1.0 FTE, benefit eligible)
Education and Experience
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must be able to communicate with team members in-person and via email, text and Skype.
- Must meet the requirements of either A, B, or C:
A. Holds a bachelor’s degree or has completed at least 30 semester credits or 45 quarter credits in behavioral sciences or related fields; and:
- Has completed a practicum or internship that (1) required direct interaction with adults or children served, and (2) focused on behavioral sciences or related fields; or
- Has at least 2,000 hours of supervised experience in the delivery of services to persons with mental illness, substance use disorders, developmental disabilities, or traumatic brain injuries.
B. Has at least 4,000 hours of supervised experience in the delivery of services to persons with mental illness, substance use disorders, developmental disabilities, or traumatic brain injuries.
C. Holds a master’s or other graduate degree in behavioral sciences or related fields.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to work with people who have severe and persistent mental illness and chemical dependency.
- Ability to supervise facility as senior staff on shift when necessary.
- Ability to provide collaborative oversight for a work shift.
- Knowledge and ability to facilitate groups.
- Ability to teach basic living skills and provide support, assistance and care for residents. Ability to serve as an appropriate role model for residents.
- Knowledge of and ability to intervene appropriately in crisis prevention and de-escalation when necessary.
- Knowledge of and ability to perform medication related tasks.
- Commitment to understanding others by genuinely seeking to know people as individuals, understand different points of view by gaining the insights of others, and cultivate cross-cultural sensitivity.
