Double Your Impact
Our incredible supporters have made a $25,000 Matching Gift to support basic needs of people served in our programs. All you have to do is make your donation by December 24 and your gift will be matched up to $25,000!
This means your gift will be doubled which helps us provide twice as much food, medication, beds, warm winter clothing, and hygiene items for people who have few resources.
Thanks to donors like you, Touchstone has provided services to 1,740 people this year and opened Minnehaha Commons in October – and our waiting lists continue to grow. Most people, like Sherry, come to Touchstone looking for help to find and keep an apartment and help meet their basic needs.
Sherry hit the streets on a frigid winter night after her life was threatened. She wandered the city, hoping a car would hit her to end her misery. Fortunately, she found a shelter who let her stay the night, even though they were full.
Sherry was used to being homeless. Her family was frequently homeless and moved over 28 times. Because her family moved so often, she never made close friends and felt isolated. Sherry’s life was chaotic and unstable. “I’ve struggled with mental illness and my emotions most of my life,” she said. “I experienced violence on the streets. My life was one big ball of trauma.”
She lived on the streets and in shelters until she was referred to Touchstone’s Housing Innovation Program. Our staff helped her find an apartment and organized her move. Sherry didn’t have a blanket, bed or anything for an apartment, so staff used our Basic Needs Fund to pay for personal and apartment essentials.
Sherry has lived in her apartment for over a year, and enjoys making it a vibrant, green space with lots of plants. “Touchstone staff helped stop the chaos in my life. I feel more stable and peaceful now,” said Sherry. “Touchstone staff helped me take control of my life and support my safety and healing.”
Most of us go through the day never thinking about our shampoo, toothpaste, or deodorant, having a coat and shoes that fit, or taking vitamins and prescribed medications. All too often, people in our programs must use their coat for a blanket or decide how often they can afford to test their blood sugar or wash their clothes. These necessities, which most of us take for granted, are critical for health and self esteem.
A gift of $100 will go a long way. We can purchase bedding, towels, a toiletry kit, and socks for one person with $100. And, if you donate by December 24 your support is doubled.
So many come to Touchstone with so little. Daerhyl came to our residential treatment program with only the clothes on his back. “I was in the hospital, then homeless. I lost all my belongings in six weeks. I couldn’t even wash my clothes since I had nothing else to wear,” said Daerhyl. He not only received mental health treatment from Touchstone, but we used our Basic Needs Fund to purchase clothes, towels and personal items.
As we move toward fall and winter holidays and the time of great abundance, you can make a gift that is truly needed. A gift to our Basic Needs Fund.
