Give Today and Inspire Hope Tomorrow

“I was an outcast at school in my small hometown,” said Sam. “People were cruel to me, since I was obviously a queer person.” He moved to Minneapolis, got a job in human services and enjoyed living in the city. “I was working, hanging out with friends, doing art and dancing,” he said. “I had a nice life.”

Sam struggled with anxiety and depression his entire life. He tried various medication and therapies, but little changed. Frustrated, he turned to meth and alcohol. “I lost everything. I lived on the streets. Days went by when I didn’t connect with anyone,” he said.

Sam was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), related to violence he experienced growing up. With the right medication and a Touchstone Case Manager, he became a member of the Intentional Communities Program (IC). “I was accepted by my peers and staff,” he said. “I have a community, a place to belong. Art is important to me too. Touchstone art classes provides me a community of creativity.”

“I feel I’m going in a new direction, multidimensional, and coming full circle,” said Sam. “Touchstone staff work on my behalf and treat me as a whole person, which leads to health and healing.”
